I know I have gone over this before, however, I feel it is so important to really get this!
God can’t move us into what He has for us if we keep holding onto the past and keep regurgitating old hurts. He promises to give us a new start (Isaiah 43:19) but like all things we need to do our bit too. Dr Caroline Leaf talks about training our brain to think the best instead of continuously thinking negative thoughts in her 21 Day Detox program. We have the ability and the power to change our thinking; it is hard when you have been through a very stressful or traumatic event but it is possible.
It is completely normal and understandable when we go through difficult circumstances to continually think about what happened as part of the grieving process, however, there will come a time when you realises it is no longer a healthy habit to do this. That is when it is time to make some changes to your thinking. Reading God’s Word is a really good place to start, Philippians 4:8 lets us know what we should be thinking on so we can start with this verse.
Understanding God’s promises to us helps us to understand His good plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11). When we really study God’s Word and meditate on it (Joshua 1:8) we will stop thinking of the things of the past so much and start looking toward the future God has for us! We were never meant to be like the Israelites who took 40 years to complete what should have taken only a couple of weeks!
Don’t get stuck in the past! Decide today to move forward, leaving the past behind as only a history lesson. Learn from it and move on!
